Forward Deployed Engineer, U.S. Government

micro1 is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer to build and deploy applied AI systems supporting high-impact U.S. Government missions. The role spans agentic AI, LLM applications, multi-agent systems, RAG, data and evaluation pipelines, model infrastructure, and production deployment in high-assurance environments. Engineers will work directly with government partners and own systems across discovery, architecture, implementation, deployment, reliability, security, and iteration. The position requires relocation to the Washington, DC area.

Responsibilities

  • Build and deploy agentic AI systems supporting high-impact U.S. Government missions from prototype through production.
  • Design and integrate LLM applications, including multi-agent systems, tool-using agents, RAG workflows, and human-in-the-loop autonomy.
  • Work directly with government partners in forward-deployed environments to translate mission requirements into technical systems.

  • Operate independently in ambiguous, partner-facing environments with significant technical and operational ownership.
  • Support deployment and operation of AI systems in high-security and high-reliability environments.

Requirements

  • Strong Python engineering skills with demonstrated end-to-end ownership of technical systems.
  • Hands-on experience developing applications using large language models.
  • Experience creating agentic AI systems and autonomous or semi-autonomous workflows.
  • Experience building or maintaining data pipelines or machine learning infrastructure.
  • Understanding of distributed systems and production-grade software architecture.
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning workflows or simulation environments.
  • Ability to operate independently in ambiguous and partner-facing environments.
  • Comfort working with mission-critical, high-security, and high-reliability systems.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate to the Washington, DC area.
  • Active U.S. security clearance or eligibility and willingness to obtain one is preferred.
  • Experience supporting U.S. Government, defense, intelligence, or national security missions is preferred.
  • Experience in startups, defense organizations, or government-focused technology companies is advantageous.
  • Ability to take ownership across architecture, implementation, deployment, reliability, and security.
